A team of middle school "mathletes" from V.I. Montessori School won the St. Thomas-St. John chapter contests of the national MATHCOUNTS program Thursday at Palms Court Harbor View Hotel. The top scorer was Taylor Ladd from Antilles School.
Members of the winning team were Kayla Clendinen, Kendell Hebert, Noah Stolz, and Sam Russell, and Donovan Carroll is their coach. The team will advance to the Virgin Islands MATHCOUNTS finals, to be held on St. Croix on March 25, 2010. Taylor Ladd (Antilles), Sheila Joseph (Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School), Briana Rhymer (BCB), and Mikaela Carty (Montessori) will also compete in the finals as individuals only.
The second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place teams were Antilles School, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, Wesleyan Academy, Sts. Peter & Paul School and All Saints School, respectively.
As a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, MATHCOUNTS prepares students for future career opportunities. More than 7 million students across the U.S. have participated in MATHCOUNTS.
Rotary Club of St. Thomas II is the local sponsor. The St. Thomas/St. John School District provides leadership for the local MATHCOUNTS program.
