The National Guard Hummers, Speak the Word Ministries and the Warriors all ended 2009 on a winning note Tuesday in the Bob Owens softball action at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park. The Hummers doubled up Anchor Dive 10-5, Speak the Word edged the Cartel 10-8, and the Warriors blanked the Dirty Dozen 27-0.
Hummers 10, Anchor Dive 5
Hummers ace Jerry Vialet’s return to the mound reaped immediate dividends as the Guardsmen doubled up Anchor Dive 10-5 in game one. It was the Hummers with 10 runs on 14 hits and two errors, while Anchor Dive finished with five runs on 11 hits and three errors. Edwin Sankitts got the loss for Anchor Dive. Top batters for the winners were Sylvester Blake (3 for 3 with a home run and seven RBIs), and Dennis Carter (3 for 3 with a home run and one RBI). For Anchor Dive, Jose Guerra was 3 for 3 with one RBI, and Julio Carmona was 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Speak the Word 10, Cartel 8
In a battle of struggling teams, Speak the Word got the best of the Cartel, 10-8, in game two on Tuesday. STW spot starter Ulric Benjamin got the win on the hill, while Dave McFarland got the loss for the Cartel. It was STW with 10 runs on 15 hits and three errors, and the Cartel finished with eight runs on 12 hits and two errors. Top batters for STW were Norbert Pickering (2 for 3 with two home runs and two RBIs) and Jeffrey Clarke (2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs). For the Cartel, Daren Lewis and Wayne Scotland were both 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs.
Warriors 27, Dirty Dozen 0
In the nightcap, the Warriors white washed Dirty Dozen 27-0 behind the two-hit pitching of ace Angel Soto. Denny Denton got the loss for the Dirty Dozen. It was the Warriors with 27 runs on 20 hits and three errors, while the Dozen finished with two hits and three errors. Top batters for the winners were Luis Alexander (3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs) and Miguel Rodriguez (3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs). For the Dirty Dozen, Wade Deshazer and Brandon Rausch were both 1 for 2.
