Agriculture Invites Applications for Beekeeping Project Training

The Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture (VIDOA) in partnership with the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, the UVI Small Business Development Center, and the Department of Tourism invites applications from those interested in participating in the third series of training activities of the Virgin Fresh Beekeeping Project. The primary objective of this project is to promote the development of an apicultural (beekeeping, industry by increasing the number of trained and skilled beekeepers in the territory. Thus far, 65 persons have successfully completed the course as a result of this project. Topics covered during the 12 weeks of training include ‘Bee Biology, Tools and Equipment, Packaging and Marketing, Health and Safety procedures in Beekeeping, Developing a Business Plan, the Business License Process, Hive Management and more. At the conclusion of the training participants will be prepared to become independent agricultural entrepreneurs.

Interested persons should submit a letter of application to VIDOA Deputy Commissioner Errol Chichester at fax number 778-7977 or via e-mail at errol.chichester@doa.vi.gov by the close of business on Monday, Sept. 28. Letters of application must describe his or her familiarity and interest in beekeeping and how information acquired during training will further his or her efforts in beekeeping. Courses will be conducted on St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix.
