Former Senator Home from Hospital After Cancer Treatments

Former Sen. Lorraine Berry is home from hospitalization in Miami, Fla., where she underwent treatment for colon cancer.

"I want everybody to know how much I appreciate the outpouring of support, the cards, the flowers I have received,” Berry said, speaking from her home Sunday evening. “I didn’t realize how many friends I have."

The former senator said she went to Miami to accompany her husband, Richard, who was awaiting results from an illness of his own. When the results were delayed, Berry said she used the unexpected down time to have a colonoscopy in Miami instead of Puerto Rico, where she had a scheduled appointment.

"The doctor admitted me immediately," Berry said.

She was hospitalized 18 days, and returned to St. Thomas last week.

"I feel great," Berry said. "I feel it’s a miracle I’m back home."

She starts chemotherapy treatment Monday at the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute.

Berry said people can write her at P.O. Box 522, St. Thomas 00804, or email her at lberry522@gmail.com.
