May 13, 2009 — The 23rd annual Innovative Boy Scouts Royak Regatta kicks off on St. Thomas Sunday with youth races starting at 9:30 a.m. at Magens Bay Beach.
Registration starts promptly at 8:30 a.m.
About 11 youth teams have registered so far, but more are expected to be on the roster by race time, said Nathan Clark, senior district executive of the V.I. Boy Scouts Council.
Last year's champs, the Pathfinders from St .Thomas Seventh Day Adventist School, are set to defend their title against JROTC teams from Charlotte Amalie and Ivanna Eudora Kean High Schools. The Pathfinders made a clean sweep of last year's race, winning both senior and junior youth divisions, along with the territorial championship title.
"The competition is going to be rigorous," Clark said. "The Boy Scouts teams are also pretty good — we generally have one or two teams in the finals — so it's definitely going to be a good show."
The annual event is a major fundraiser for the Boy Scouts, and helps sponsor training and leadership programs and camping opportunities, Clark said.
St. Croix's race will take place on May 31.
Residents can call Clark at 774-2752 or email nclark@bsamail.org for more details.
