Inmate Dies at Correctional Facility

April 7, 2009 — An investigation is under way to determine the cause of death of Hillario Castillo, a 79-year-old inmate at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility, who died Tuesday.
According to V.I. Bureau of Corrections Director Julius Wilson, Castillo was found, unresponsive, in his cell shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday, during a routine inspection of his cell.
The Virgin Islands Police Department was contacted to call for an ambulance, which arrived at the facility around 9 a.m. Following a thorough examination by emergency medical technicians, Castillo was pronounced dead at around 10 a.m. and his body was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital.
Castillo was a Hispanic male from the Dominican Republic. He was admitted to the Bureau on May 11, 2004, to serve a 10-year sentence for his conviction on domestic-violence related charges of aggravated rape, unlawful sexual contact and child abuse.
The investigation into Castillo’s death is ongoing and will include the performance of an autopsy to determine the official cause of his death.
