V.I. Health Care Getting a Stimulus Boost

March 30, 2009 — Two public-health clinics in the Virgin Islands will receive funding under the federal stimulus package, also known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"I was pleased to hear that the Frederiksted Health Care Inc. and the St. Thomas East End Medical Corporation are both slated to receive economic-stimulus funding," Delegate Donna M. Christensen said in a statement from her office Monday.
The federal Health Resources and Services Administration received funding under a provision for increased demand for services. According to HRSA, Frederiksted Clinic cited the "high level of persons who suffer from both hypertension and diabetes" and the "high cases of persons needing dialysis" who seek help at its facilities to qualify for funding.
The St. Thomas East End Clinic cited the "need to provide comprehensive health care to under-served communities" in its justification for the funding. The Frederiksted Clinic will receive $160,435 and the St. Thomas East End Clinic will receive $131,165.
