Dahomey Sweeps Against All Odds in Winter League Volleyball

Feb. 23, 2009 — With violent serves that left even her opponents in awe, Janelle Sarauw dominated the court Sunday night to propel Dahomey to a straight-set victory over Against All Odds in the St. Thomas-St. John Volleyball Association's Winter League games.
Dahomey wasted no time dismantling their opponents, beating them 25-16, 25-21 and 25-19 in the middle of a five-game night at the Charlotte Amalie High School gym. In the first game of the night, Island Mixx I defeated Against All Odds in the junior girls division in two sets, 25-0, 25-0. In the advanced female's game, Island Mixx I lost their first set to Island Mixx II 25-22, but rallied to win the next three sets 25-18, 27-25 and 25-16.
Island Mixx also won in the junior boys division, taking down Nice It Up 25-0 and 25-11. To wrap up the night, The Bucs defeated Island Mixx in the advanced male division 25-21, 25-13 and 25-21.
Only in its second week of the 2009 season, the 20-team league has already had its share of exciting games, according to organizer Mark Daniel.
"Our men's field is really competitive," Daniel said. "The two top teams are Chapsuie and UVI, although 40 Plus also has a well-rounded team if everyone comes out. The two younger teams on the boys' side — Kush and Island Mixx — are also doing fairly well. On the girls' side, Full Force and Dahomey are the teams to beat, but we also have four young teams in the league, so I think that's also going to keep everything competitive."
The league's games will continue at CAHS until mid-April, Daniel said.
"Our first set of games started off last week, and so far everything is going good," he said. "We had a couple of forfeits in the first couple of days, but right now all the teams have been getting their uniforms and everything else together, so it's picking up. As the league progresses, we'll have even more exciting games. So we're off to a good start — the teams are learning the ropes and everyone's having fun, so we expect a great league."
