Lady Canes Eliminate Host Lady Caribs from CHS Tourney 42-36

Feb. 15, 2009 — The Antilles high school Lady Hurricanes limited the host Lady Caribs to just five first half points on Saturday, then withstood a frantic second half comeback by the Caribs to win by six points, 42-36, in an elimination game at the Central High gym.
Victoria Hamilton, who netted a game-high 22 points, scored 10 of her total to help her team hold off the charging Lady Caribs.
The first quarter was a defensive struggle for both teams, but the Lady Canes were able to hold a 7-3 edge at the end of one quarter. The second quarter was even worst for the Lady Caribs as the Canes' defense held them to two second quarter points while using a balanced attack to amass 11 points of their own for a 13-point lead at the end of the half at 18-5.
The second half started much better for the Lady Caribs as they began to get back into the game, led by Lanese Bough's seven third-quarter points. The Lady Caribs trailed by 9 points, 28-19, at the end of the third quarter after outscoring the Canes 14-10 in the period.
The comeback continued in the fourth quarter for the Lady Caribs as their balanced attack in the period was now threatening the Lady Canes once-huge lead. Hamilton, however, took her team on her back, erupting for 10 fourth-quarter points to keep the Lady Caribs at bay. Nine of 14 free throws also helped the Lady Canes maintained their advantage down the stretch.
Hamilton led all scorers with a game-high 22 points, while teammate Che'Les Martini netted nine points for the Lady Canes. For the Caribs, Bough netted 11 points and Shamyra Vanterpool chipped in with seven points.
