Hummers Shut Out 40 Caliber, 17-0; Cartel and Claudio Enterprises Also Win

Jan. 27, 2009 — Monday night in the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League, the National Guard Hummers' ace pitcher, Jerry Vialet, threw a shut out — almost unheard-of in slow-pitch softball — limiting the hapless 40 Caliber squad to just two hits in a 17-0 whitewash.
The two hits by 40 Caliber is a league record for the fewest hits in a complete game. The team is now solidly entrenched at the bottom of the league's standings. Also recording wins on Monday were the Cartel and Claudio Enterprises.
Claudio Enterprises 13, Speak the Word 6
Speak the Word outhit Claudio Enterprises 17-16, but the latter came away with a 13-6 victory in game one Monday night. The big difference in the contest was the timely use by Claudio of the six home runs, allowed each team per game. Claudio finished with 13 runs on 16 hits with three errors, while Speak the Word plated six runs on 17 hits and four errors. Angel Soto got the win on the hill for Claudio, while Steve Nisky got the loss for Speak the Word. Top hitters for the winners were Juan Moreno, 2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Enercido Bon, 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. For Speak the Word, Edwin Derweer went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs and Ramon Almonte went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.
Hummers 17, 40 Caliber 0
40 Caliber shot all blanks Monday as they got blanked by the National Guard Hummers in game two, 17-0. The Hummers scored 17 runs on 21 hits with two errors, while 40 Caliber was only able to muster two hits against winning pitcher Vialet. Howard Forbes got the loss. Top batters for the hummers were Neal Davis, 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Mervin Mills, 2 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs. For 40 Caliber, Orlando Benitez went 1 for 1 and Robert Skettles went 1 for 2.
Cartel 16, Anchor Dive 11
In another contest where the losing team outhit the winners, the Cartel got by Anchor Dive 16-11 even though they were outhit 18-13. Once again, however, the long ball proved to be the difference. The Cartel had 16 runs on 13 hits with three errors, while Anchor Dive finished with 11 runs on 18 hits with two errors. The winning pitcher was Eddie Dunkirk, while Mario Simmonds got the loss for Anchor Dive. Daren Lewis led the Cartel offensively, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs, and Dunkirk chipped in by going 2 for 4 with one home run and one RBI. For Anchor Dive, Danny Rodriguez went 3 for 3 with three RBI and Simmonds went 2 for 3 with one RBI.
