N.Y. Times Piece Praises Territory But Overlooks St. Croix

Jan. 25, 2009 — The New York Times' annual Travel section feature on good places to visit in the Caribbean, printed Sunday, stiffed St. Croix (and the British Virgin Islands) while saying nice things about St. Thomas and St. John.
The widely read section had encouraging things to say about the U.S. Virgin Islands generally:
"Picking the United States Virgin Islands is a cost-cutting venture in itself. No passport? No worries if you're an American citizen, so you have just saved $75. Need a cell phone? No roaming charges with major carriers like AT&T. What else? No plug adapters, no sales tax and no currency exchange fees … [the islands] have all the trademarks of an exotic Caribbean getaway; beautiful white beaches, balmy weather, water sports galore, rum-spiked drinks and swaying palm trees."
Answering its own question on where to stay, the Times cites Green Iguana in Charlotte Amalie, Inn at Villa Olga in Frenchtown and, on St. John, Maho Bay Camps. Regarding the last-named, it writes: "Temper your excitement: Rooms, $135 in the high season, are furnished with little more than cot-sized beds and propane burners. It also lack running water and you must clean up after yourself."
As to where to eat, the Times suggests Sun Dog Café and Waterfront Bistro in Cruz Bay, St. John. It describes, in Frenchtown, "the high-end ambiance" of Craig & Sally's. It also suggests, for breakfast and lunch, Frenchtown Deli and Coffeeshop in Charlotte Amalie, and Gladys' Café.
The other 10 tourist destinations in the article are Antigua, Aruba, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten/St. Martin, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks and Caicos.
The article is the lead item in the Sunday travel section and is headlined: "Affordable Caribbean." The part about the Virgin Islands was penned by David G. Allan, a well-known travel writer.
