AT&T Completes Repairs and Upgrades That Caused Service Interruptions

Dec. 23, 2008 – AT&T has finished upgrading its system across the Virgin Islands and making repairs to the St. Croix system so that customers can now use 3G service, spokesman Rosie Montalvo said from Puerto Rico. The repair work apparently caused scattered, periodic service problems on St. Croix.
The 3G system is now operational across the Virgin Islands.
"It's high-speed broadband wireless service that brings a whole host of services," Montalvo said. "We've tested and retested."
The St. Croix system suffered interruptions from midnight to 7 a.m. during the weekend of Dec. 12 and 13, Montalvo said.
AT&T workers on St. Croix made temporary repairs to the system after Hurricane Omar's October passage in order to return service to customers. Montalvo said that permanent repairs were made during the upgrade.
Additionally, service on St. Thomas was intermittent on Monday and Tuesday, one AT&T customer said. Montalvo could not be reached for information about this problem.
Efforts were made to obtain information about outages on St. Croix shortly after they occurred, but the AT&T office on St. Croix did not return several phone calls until Friday night. It took until Tuesday for the Source to get information.
According to a press release sent Monday, AT&T has expanded its coverage area by 30 percent.
