Former Schneider CFO Advised of Rights

Oct. 14, 2008 — Former Schneider Regional Medical Center Chief Financial Officer Peter Najawicz appeared in court Tuesday for an advice-of-rights hearing.
He is one of several former hospital officials fired after an investigation into financial discrepancies at the hospital. The officials have subsequently been charged with embezzlement, conspiracy, grand larceny and perjury.
Arrested Oct. 7 on warrants issued by V.I. Superior Court Judge Michael C. Dunstan, Najawicz was off island when his co-workers appeared for their advice-of-rights hearings Oct. 8. (See "Judge Upholds Charges Against Hospital Officials Accused of Diverting Millions.")
Najawicz, who is charged with nine violations of the V.I. code, was advised of his rights by V.I. Superior Court Judge Brenda J. Hollar, without any of his fellow defendants present.
Najawicz has posted $250,000 bail and is being represented by attorney Robert L. King. Both men declined to comment on the case Tuesday. An arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.
