July 15, 2008 — A two-car accident Tuesday along St. Thomas' Moravian Highway resulted in a police sergeant going to the hospital.
While the driver of the other vehicle was not injured, Sgt. Dwayne DeGraff was transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for lacerations to the face and later released.
DeGraff and other officers were in pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday when the incident occurred. Witnesses said DeGraff — head of the V.I. Police Department's Special Operations Bureau — was traveling toward Cyril E. King Airport when his vehicle collided with a red truck making a right turn on the road that runs past Moravian School and leads into Nisky Center. DeGraff's vehicle swerved to avoid impact, but the two vehicles still hit each other, witnesses said.
The police car skidded across the street, flipped over and hit a nearby utility pole. DeGraff was transported to the hospital, and is suffering from lacerations to the face and body pains. His police vehicle sustained "substantial" damage, according to a VIPD news release.
The driver of the other vehicle did not need to be hospitalized, and his vehicle sustained minor damage, the release said.
VIPD's Traffic Investigation Unit is looking into the accident.
