Dec. 8, 2007 – "On behalf of the people and Government of the United States Virgin Islands, I am pleased to share in this Hanukkah holiday season with all residents of the Territory. Also known as The Festival of Lights, the Jewish festival of rededication starts on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, and may occur from late November to late December. During this Festival of Lights, we observe the traditional lighting of the Menorah and celebrate the proud traditions and history of this special season of observance with family and friends."
"The traditional celebration at this time of year honors the Maccabees who liberated the Temple from the hands of the Greek invaders in the second century B.C. As we pause in recognition of this proud heritage, we recall the story of Hanukkah and celebrate its proud traditions together. In recognition of this history, we gather in prayer, and in thanks, paying tribute to our shared cultural traditions with honor, dignity, and pride.
"Hanukkah is a time for the community to celebrate the bonds of family and friendship, as well as the traditions of candle-lighting, gift giving, and togetherness. It is also a time to proudly honor the strong heritage of the Jewish faith in recognition of the noble contributions of the Jewish peoples to our present day culture and lifestyle. At this time of community observation, we are grateful for the efforts of our fellow residents in their quest to enliven the spirit of Hanukkah and spread holiday cheer to all.
