Brief: Hassel Island Cleanup Coming Up Saturday

Dec. 5, 2007 — A half-day of cleanup activities on Hassel Island is slated for Saturday, bringing together volunteers from the V.I. public and private schools, St. Thomas Historical Trust, Friends of V.I. National Park, UVI, Junior ROTC, Civil Air Patrol, V.I. Amateur Boxing Federation, Department of Tourism, and the governor's office.
As part of the "bag and drag" component of the overall cleanup effort, volunteers will remove garbage and other debris at the site, including along the shoreline and beaches and in areas where ship debris has been collected and then removed, according to a Government House news release. Ten areas have been targeted for the volunteer component of the cleanup, and individuals will be dispatched to the designated areas upon arrival at Hassel Island.
"The Hassel Island cleanup was launched by the Office of the Governor as part of an overall effort to beautify the islands in public-private partnerships," the release said. "Saturday's component offers an opportunity to highlight the dedicated efforts of young people involved in the administration's territorial cleanup campaign."
Transportation to Hassel Island will be available from Crown Bay Port Authority Excursion Dock.
