Brief: NOAA to Donate Weather Radios to V.I. Schools

Nov. 18, 2007 — The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Tuesday will donate emergency radios for every school in the V.I.
Gov. John deJongh Jr., the V.I. Office of Homeland Security, along with the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA), will be present for the donation from NOAA to the Department of Education at Leonard Dober Elementary School on St. Thomas at 1 p.m. Tuesday. A representative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will also be on hand.
St. Thomas-St. John and St. Croix school district officials will accept the radios on behalf of the Department of Education.
Every school in the territory will get the radios to best provide public school administrators with an early warning system to monitor current information on natural disasters.
The emergency weather radios pick up broadcasts of official National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The National Weather Radio network also broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards including earthquakes and hurricanes, environmental hazards such as chemical releases or oil spills, and public safety alerts.
