Nov. 9, 2007 — Get rid of old electronic waste at upcoming V.I. Waste Management Authority waste-collection days.
"It's against the law to put hazardous waste into the landfill," said authority spokeswoman Stella Saunders.
On St. Thomas and St. Croix, collections will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov 15 through 17. The location on St. Thomas is Warehouse 17 in Sub Base, located west of Frank's Bakery. The St. Croix location is 941-946 Williams Delight, which is the authority's office and east of Sunshine Mall.
The St. John collection runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Cruz Bay Park bandstand.
Items allowed for collection include central-processing units, disk drives, keyboards, laptop computers, monitors, computer mice, projectors, scanners, speaker sets, surge protectors, walkie-talkies, video cameras, two-way radios, copiers, printers, fax machines, televisions and PDA/handheld systems.
On St. Croix only, the authority will collect fluorescent light bulbs during the Nov. 15 through 17 collection, but the number is limited to six per person, Saunders said. The collection is for residential fluorescent light bulbs only. They must be boxed.
Residents must box their electronic waste, with no more than three of the same items allowed. They must also provide someone to unload their items from their vehicle and load them into the authority's vehicle.
Businesses must pre-register with the authority. Applications are available at the authority's Wheatley Center office on St. Thomas and the La Grande Princesse and William's Delight offices on St. Croix. On St. John, applications are available at the Public Works Department office in Susannaberg.
Except for jumbo items, businesses must bring items in boxes. They must also have someone unload and load the items.
While electronic-waste recycling is free for residents, businesses must pay fees. Disposing of a mouse costs 50 cents. The fee is $1 for disk drives, keyboards, handheld devices, speaker sets, telephones, two-way radios and walkie-talkies.
The fee is $2 for surge protectors and video cameras. The disposal fee for laptop computers, projectors, scanners and 15 to 17-inch monitors runs $5. Monitors 19 to 21 inches cost $10, with those 24 to 27 inches running $15. Copiers, printers and fax machines run $5 to $50, depending on size. TVs are $5 to $35, depending on size.
Only checks and money orders are accepted. They must be made out to the V.I. Waste Management Authority.
The items are inventoried, put in a trailer and shipped to a mainland recycler, Saunders said.
