Oct. 26, 2007 — V.I. champion thoroughbred Kentucky Kris will be back on the big island Sunday to take on four local runners in the Randall “Doc” James track feature race of the day.
The one-mile race will feature Kentucky Kris, carrying a top weight of 121 pounds; current St. Croix champ Crafty Smile (117); Black Jack Bob (117); looking to regain his lost form, the late-running Gallego (117); and the little horse with a big heart, Carson Secrets (115). In his last race on St. Croix July 2, Kentucky Kris toyed with the field in the 1 1/8-mile Emancipation Day Handicap, winning easily by three lengths to reassert himself as the best thoroughbred in the entire Virgin Islands.
Gallego, Carson Secrets and Crafty Smile all performed well in their last races, and should be firing on all cylinders come Sunday. Black Jack Bob, Brow Stables' talented stallion, will contest his second race after a serious injury setback earlier in the year, and could surprise if he is ready.
Another race of note will be second race of the day, when former native champion All Eyes on Me comes out of retirement. His barn is looking to get a couple of races under his belt in hopes of getting him ready for the third leg of the native Triple Crown in December. Last year the old warrior shocked the St. Croix racing circle when he came from dead last to win that same race in a monumental upset. The curious will definitely be looking to see if he has anything left in the tank.
