Organization Offers Free Gas Cards to People Getting HIV/AIDS Tests

Sept. 28, 2007 — Get tested for HIV/AIDS and a handful of other health issues and you'll get a free $20 gas card, good at E&C gas station on St. John.
Helping Others in a Positive Environment (HOPE) will hold a free Health Information Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Winston Wells Ballfield in Cruz Bay.
Women who come with their driver's licenses are eligible to get the gas cards, said Marcia Gordon, HOPE's Senir Program coach. Non-driving women and men will go home with a T-shirt.
"We encourage couples to come," she said.
HOPE has 25 gas cards to give away, Gordon said. In addition to HIV/AIDS testing, screenings will include body-mass index, blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol. Results will be available soon after the tests.
"It takes about 40 minutes to complete the whole process," Gordon said. If those tests were done at a doctor's office they would cost a lot of money, she noted.
HOPE funds the gas giveaways through a federal grant, Gordon said. A similar event Sept. 1 on St. Thomas was well attended.
"We gave away most of our gas cards," she said.
