Clarence Altheo Heyliger Dead at 74

Sept. 26, 2007 – Clarence Altheo Heyliger, popularly known in the community as “Cherra,” died on Sept. 21, at age 74. He served as an educator in the public school system, a retiree at St. Patrick’s Catholic School, deputy commissioner of Public Works and executive director of the Virgin Islands Legislature. His community service included chairperson of the Crucian Christmas Fiesta; member of the American Legion; founder and chairperson of the Sports Award Ceremonies; chairperson of the 150th celebration of the 1848 Emancipation; host of several radio and television shows; master of ceremony for numerous community events including the 2007 governor’s inaugural events on St. Croix; organizer of various sports leagues and member of the Horse Racing Commission. Heyliger was also very involved with his church, St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Fredericksted, where he served the Episcopal Diocese as the dean of the St. Croix Episcopal Churches and as a delegate to the 2006 National Convention in Ohio. Additionally, he was a seminarian at the New York Theological Seminary and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice D. Heyliger; children: James Coppin, Cyd Heyliger-Browne, Clarence Leslie Davvin Heyliger and Kym Heyliger-Hubert; grandchildren: Delasie Demour Breen, Trudy Diane Browne, John Heston Hubert, Johnny Sebastian Hubert, Devin Alteo Browne, Johnathan Hubert, Kenson Michael Browne, Johnal Hubert, Kym-Mari Joni Hubert. He is also survived by sister, Terencia Allick; brothers: Alwyn Lynch and Roy Lynch, and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
A viewing will be held from 10-11 a.m., on Friday, Sept. 28, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Fredricksted, followed at 11 a.m., by a funeral service at the church. Arrangements are by the Thomas/Hyll Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services of St. Croix.
