Brief: Governor Orders Flags at Half Staff Thursday

Sept. 18, 2007 — Gov. John deJongh Jr. has directed that flags on all public buildings in the territory be flown at half staff Thursday in memory of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Gregory Rivera-Santiago, whose funeral will take place that day.
“This is a fitting tribute to a young Virgin Islander who gave his life in service to protect the rights and freedoms we enjoy each day,” deJongh said.
The governor, who was on hand to receive Rivera-Santiago’s body Monday afternoon, will attend the full military funeral as he joins a grateful community in expressing condolences to the fallen soldier’s family and friends.
Rivera-Santiago’s body will lay in repose at Government House on St. Croix from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday before funeral services scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant. Interment will follow at Kingshill cemetery.
