Willet Hammers Unbeaten 106 as Nevis Crushes Virgin Islands

Sept. 16, 2007 — Tonito Willet's unbeaten ton spearheaded Nevis’ easy 162-runs win over the Combined Virgin Islands on the final day of their Leeward Islands Cricket Association match at the Schjang Ballpark on Saturday.
Set 315 for victory, the CVI collapsed dramatically and the match was over minutes before tea as the home side was dismissed for a mere 153.
Nevis off-spinner, Junior Williams, was at the center of the CVI demise, capturing five for 66 from 17.3 overs while Juernel Turner took three for 35 and medium-fast bowler Tonito Willet, two for 23.
Sherville Hugging was the only CVI batsman who offered any kind of serious resistance. He made a workmanlike 32 that included five fours.
Number nine batsman, Brent DeFraitas gave the how town fans a bit of excitement on a day that was already lost, by attacking the Nevis spin attack for a quick-fire 25 runs that included two mammoth sixes.
Philern Davis made 23, captain Maxford Pipe, 19 and Junie Anthony, 24.
Nevis, which resumed in the morning session on 258 for six, added another 13 runs before declaring at 271 for seven. Willet’s patient, unbeaten106 included 11 fours. Opener, Keiran Powell also had a half century. He made a well-played 54 that included a six and four fours. Trevier Smithen made 27 not-out and Joel Simmonds, 23.
They then turned things over to their bowlers who mowed down the CVI batsmen for the easy win.
The NAGICO-sponsored one-day match concludes Nevis’ tour of the Virgin Islands on Sunday at the same venue. Two week ago, the CVI defeated Anguilla in their one-day encounter after also having lost the three-day affair.
