Brief: Man Drowns Off Frederiksted Beach

July 30, 2007 — The VIPD dive team recovered the body of Frederiksted resident Gerrard Doward 200 feet from the Frederiksted beach around 3 p.m. Monday.
Doward, 38, and a friend went on a recreational fishing trip early in the day and the vessel’s engine failed, according to a VIPD news release issued late Monday. Doward attempted to swim ashore for assistance around 11 a.m., his fishing companion told police. A missing person report was filed with police at approximately 1:30 p.m., the release said.
A citizen walking along the beach discovered the drowned man's body and contacted police. Doward’s family and loved ones were notified of the incident at the scene.
