May 25, 2007 — Omar Encarnacion scattered seven hits over eight innings, struck out six and got three double plays from his defense to lead the Yankees to a 14-7 win over the Mets Thursday night in the Raphael Jackson AA baseball league.
The Mets got on the board early in the top of the first and did not score again until the fifth when Encarnacion showed a bit of fatigue in the game played at the Paul E. Joseph Stadium in Frederiksted. He got back on track after that, however, and limited the Mets to just one run over the final three innings.
Batting first, the Mets scored three runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by Edwin Derweer and Tony Cruz and a sacrifice fly by Dario Linares to take the early lead. The Yankees were equal to the task in the bottom of the inning, answering with three runs of their own on an RBI single by Jose Morales, an RBI ground out by Carlos Morales and an error on the Mets' second baseman to tie the game at three at the end of one inning.
After the Mets failed to score in the top of the second, the Yankees took the lead for good, scoring one run on another error by the Mets' second baseman to lead 4-3 at the end of two.
The Yankees pushed their lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the third, plating four runs on a bases-loaded, three-run triple off the bat of second baseman Omar Eastman and an RBI single off the bat of Eliezer Ramirez.
Two more Yankee runs in the bottom of the fourth — on an RBI single by Ramirez and an error by the Mets' third baseman — extended the lead to 10-3.
The Mets tried to get back in the game in the top of the fifth as they touched Encarnacion for three runs on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Juan Isaac and two Yankee errors to get to within four at 10-6. The Yankees failed to score in the bottom of the inning.
The Mets added their final run of the game in the top of the sixth when Encarnacion balked with a runner on third to get to within three at 10-7. But that would be as close as they would get. A revitalized Encarnacion settled down and held them scoreless for the rest of the time-shortened eight-inning contest.
Meanwhile the Yankees got one in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single off the bat of Jose Morales and three in the bottom of the seventh to complete their scoring for the game with a 14-7 victory. The Yankees scored three run on three Mets errors.
Encarnacion got the win for the Yankees while Chalo Martin got the loss for the Mets. Top hitters for the Yankees were Jose Morales, 2 for 3 with two RBIs; Ramirez, 2 for 4 with two RBIs; and Eastman, 1 for 5 with three RBIs. For the Mets, Derweer went 2 for 3 with one RBI and Cruz 1 for 4 with one RBI.
Mets 14, Monarchs 1
Ariel Gil, the Mets' young lefty, turned in a dominating two-hitter Wednesday night as the Mets pummeled the Monarchs 14-1 in a time-shortened seven-inning game. Andre Poche got the loss for the Monarchs.
Leading the Mets' offensive output was Dwayne Harvey, who went 4 for 5 with two RBIs; Juan Isaac and Francisco Barone, both 3 for 5 with two RBIs; and Luis Moreno, 1 for 1 with a home run and an RBI. For the Monarchs, Dwayne Thomas went 1 for 1 with one RBI and Jose Robles went 1 for 1.
