WMA Awards Waste Collection Contracts

April 18, 2007 — The V.I. Waste Management Authority recently awarded contracts to four St. Thomas waste haulers to pick up garbage at 24 roll-on/roll-off bin sites around the island, as well as keeping the bin sites cleaned up.
"The contracts just got signed Friday," authority spokeswoman Stella Saunders said, adding that they are for two years.
She said the island is divided into five zones, with one contractor having been awarded two zones. She did not have a breakdown of where the bins are located.
Patrick Charles Enterprises received an annual contract of $415,740 to pick up trash in zones A and C.
Paradise Waste has a $232,960 annual contract for waste collection in zone B, while H & V Heavy Equipment's annual contract is for $294,840 to pick up waste in zone D. A-9 Trucking has an annual contract of $109,200 for picking up trash in zone E.
Saunders urged residents to call the authority if they see a bin site is not cleaned sufficiently or if the haulers don't have their trucks properly covered.
"We will cite haulers for noncompliance," she said.
In other authority news, she said that during the upcoming Carnival Adult's Parade, authority staff will distribute garbage bags to parade goers so they can keep their trash in one place. She said that once the parade is over, crews will then only have to pick up the bags instead of trash strewn about the streets.
"We're trying to encourage proper disposal of trash," she said.
To report problems, call the authority at 715-0460 or 690-4208.
