Local 'Mathletes' Will Compete in Territorial Contest

March 16, 2007 – "Mathletes" from the St. Croix Country Day School team will go up against the Antilles School team on March 22, at Palms Court Harbourview Hotel in the territorial contest of the national MATHCOUNTS program.
The members of the St. Croix Country Day School team, coached by Kate Baker, are: Bill Byrd, Jamesey Calvo, Genna Keller, and Lillian Mallory. The members of the Antilles School team, coached by Michelle Garcia, are: Sheline Chandi, Richard Driscoll, Julia Hogroian, and Jordan Ladd.
The teams, along with eight additional mathletes, will compete in the individual portion of the competition. The individual competitors are: Henry Mark (Good Hope School), Melissa Bramble (John H. Woodson Jr. High School), Yahya Yusuf (Iqra Academy), Blair Coughlin (St. Croix Country Day), Dykisha Potter (All Saints School), Lia Fabian (Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School), Nicole Joseph (Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School), and Bedir Ayguni (Lockhart Elementary School).
Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include probability, statistics, linear algebra and polynomials. The winners will receive trophies and plaques. The four mathletes with the highest individual scores will advance to the National MATHCOUNTS Finals, to be held in Fort Worth, Texas on May 11. The coach of the top team will serve as the coach of the Virgin Islands team.
MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide program designed to increase interest and involvement in mathematics among all U.S. middle school students. Sponsors target sixth (6th), seventh (7th), and eighth (8th) graders who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining interest and ability in math.
Rotary Club of St. Thomas II is the local sponsor. The national sponsors of MATHCOUNTS are Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Company, Texas Instruments Incorporated, Northrop Grumman Foundation, National Society of Professional Engineers, 3M Foundation, General Motors Foundation, CNA Foundation, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
