UVI to Mark 45th Anniversary with Charter Month Events, Activities
In recognition of UVI's 45th anniversary, the University will host a number of "Charter" activities during the month of March 2007. The official Charter Day Ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 16, in Chase Auditorium, room B-110 on the St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to the Theater, Evans Center room 401 on the St. Croix campus. The theme for this year's Charter Month activities is "Celebrating the Past, Looking to the Future." Numerous activities are scheduled on both campuses, including a walk/run on St. Croix, several performances, the Miss UVI Ambassadorial Pageant, and the celebration of The Caribbean Writers' 20th anniversary.

UVI Spring Break Set March 12-15; Schedule for Libraries Announced
The University of the Virgin Islands will observe spring break from Monday, March 12, through Thursday, March 15. During that period no classes are scheduled on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses. University administrative offices will remain open. During spring break, UVI's libraries will open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, the libraries will be closed from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, for staff training. Buccaneers to Host UPR-Cayey in Home Game on Friday, March 9
UVI's Buccaneers men's basketball (4-6) team will take on UPR-Cayey in a home game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9. The Lady Bucs' (6-3) scheduled game against UPR-Carolina has been moved to March 15. Home games are played in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center.
Remaining LAI league games have been rescheduled. Counting Friday's matchup, the Bucs and Lady Bucs have five remaining home games. The schedule and game results are available from the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.

UVI's Blyden-Richards Selected as Student Ambassador
University of the Virgin Islands senior Amarae Blyden-Richards was selected as the student ambassador for the Friends of Denmark Society of St. Thomas/St. John. In that position Blyden-Richards will spend three weeks this July in Denmark sharing Virgin Islands culture, history and customs with select Danes through a student exchange program between organizations in the Virgin Islands and Denmark. $2,000 Award Offered for Best Constitution 2008 Calypso Tune
The University of the Virgin Islands is collaborating with the Virgin Islands Carnival Committee to recognize the local calypsonian who composes a tune which best advances the goals of the public education project in support of the upcoming Constitutional Convention. UVI will present a $2,000 award in April to the local calypsonian who provides a tune that best advances the effort. A news release is available on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.

March 15 is Deadline to Apply for UVI 2007-08 Scholarships
March 15 is the deadline to apply for scholarships to UVI for the fall semester of 2007 and the spring semester of 2008. Applications have been distributed to all Virgin Islands high schools and are available in the following offices on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses – Financial Aid, Institutional Advancement, Upward Bound, Libraries and Student Activities. Hill Memorial Scholarship Application Deadline is March 12
March 12 is the deadline for junior or senior undergraduate students to submit applications for the Heyward G. Hill Memorial Scholarship of the DACOR Bacon House Foundation. The one-time, $5,000 scholarship is for individuals with demonstrated need who are studying international affairs. For more information, call Zaida Castro in the Office of the Provost at 693-1200.

Caribbean Writer to Mark 20th Anniversary on March 19
The Caribbean Writer, an international literary anthology published in the summer of each year by the University of the Virgin Islands, will commemorate its 20th anniversary milestone at a celebratory event scheduled for Monday, March 19, 2007 at 6 p.m. in the Great Hall (North West Wing Conference Rooms) on the St. Croix Campus. Included will be readings by past prize winners and presentations by founding editor Dr. Erika J. Waters and current editor Marvin E. Williams. Dates Announced for Spring Semester Math Skills Common Exams
UVI's Math Skills Common Exams for the spring semester are scheduled for May 4 on both campuses. Times and location details are featured on the Academics page of UVI Web – www.uvi.edu.

Taxi and Tour Program Expands to Include Certified Tour Guides
A UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) certification program designed for licensed taxi operators has been expanded to include individuals wishing to become certified tour guides. The next session of the six-week program begins on St. Thomas at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13. The training costs $250 and includes materials. The course, which is endorsed by the USVI Hotel and Tourism Association and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, covers customer service, V.I. history and culture, points of interest, and presentation skills. Charter Day Archery Tournament Results
Halla Said and Gabriel Rivera emerged as the top archers in the second annual Charter Day Archery Tournament held Wednesday, March 7, on the St. Croix Campus. Said scored a personal best 256 to win the women's flight, while Rivera scored also scored a personal best 312 to win the men's flight. Marie Jouavel and Kalima Schmidt took second and third in the women's flight, while Jechonias James and Ernie Schuster took second and third in the men's flight. Said and Rivera won the mixed team title followed by Schmidt and James and Kelly-Ann Joseph and Schuster. The competition, sponsored by Education Division and Intramural Department, drew 19 archers.

Reichhold Center to Keep Tap Alive with Savion Glover Show on March 10
Tap dancing ambassador Savion Glover hoofs his way to UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. Tickets are available at Modern Music, Parrot Fish, Urban Threadz, the UVI Bookstore, V.I. Bridal & Tuxedo and the Reichhold Center Box Office at 693-1559.
