Friends of the Park Looking for Work Crew Volunteers

Feb. 21, 2007 — If you've got a Saturday morning to spare, the Friends of V.I. National Park need help on its volunteer work crews. "It's going to be basic work," Friends program manager Kristin Maize said.
She said the volunteer work crews will start on the job March 3. Work will run Saturdays until further notice.
Maize said that volunteers should show up at 8 a.m. at the park's maintenance facility, located next to Mongoose Junction shopping center in Cruz Bay.
She said most projects will take about a half-day.
Maize said to start, crews will work on removing brush from trails, but the work will expand to building water bars to divert water off the trails, removing brush from ruins, painting, building decks, and other projects.
"The projects will vary weekly," she said.
She said that participants don't have to make a long-term commitment but rather can decide on a Saturday morning that they want to volunteer that day. "You can come whenever," she said.
She said people should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed-toe shoes to protect themselves from brush and bring plenty of water.
Maize said the Friends decided to organize the work crews because many people wanted short-term volunteer work during the winter season. She said forming work crews gives them direction, allows them to work with a group and helps them meet new people.
