Kirwan Elementary Hosts Workshop on Folk Music

Feb. 6, 2006 – The Kirwan Elementary School is hosting the second in a series of workshops on "Folk Music of the Virgin Islands." The presentation will be held on Friday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m., in the school cafeteria and will feature culture bearers Raymond "Ray" LaMotta and Glen "Kwabana" Davis.
LaMotta will speak on his family's musical legacy and play excerpts from their compostitions. Kwabena will share his experiences as a flolklorist, claypsonian, choir director, composer and guitarist.
Neomie Toussaint-Williams, the music instructor, will lead the school choir and band in performing folk songs from the Joyce LaMotta songbook. The workshop is funded by the Humanities Council of the Virgin Islands and the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts.
