Cycling Championship Set for Sunday

Aug. 9, 2005 – St. Croix will be the scene Sunday of the 2005 Cycling National Championships sponsored by the V.I. Cycling Federation.
The event will help decide who gets to go to the Caribbean Cycling Championships to be held in Aruba in October.
The race Sunday begins at Junie's Bar on the Hess Road at 7 a.m. Registration runs from 6:25 a.m. to 6:45 a.m.
The course runs along the Hess Road, the South Shore Road and the East End. Distances are 36 miles for the elite group of riders, 23 for the expert group and 13 for sport riders.
"We divide by talent rather than age," said Tom Guthrie, one of the race's organizers.
Guthrie said first-place winners in all three categories win $100. Second-place winners get $50, and third-place finishers receive $25.
Because the U.S. Virgin Islands participates in the Olympics, it can have a national champion, he said.
The event wraps up the 2005 cycling season.
"We've been racing for nine months," Guthrie said, adding that he expects about 40 participants, most of them coming from St. Croix.
Last year, St. Croix resident Jamie Keys won the event.
