Nov. 11, 2004 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull has concluded a successful series of meetings on the Territory's EDC program in Washington, D.C., he said in a press release Thursday.
Wednesday, he met with White House officials, Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton and senior Treasury Department officials. Turnbull also met with Secretary of the Treasury John Snow late Tuesday afternoon, the release said.
"I am heartened by the response we received in Washington regarding the need to develop fair and reasonable rules for the EDC program which has contributed so greatly to our economy and our fiscal future," Turnbull said in the release.
At the meeting with Treasury, Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy Greg Jenner responded to Turnbull's request for immediate guidance for EDC beneficiaries by stating that Treasury intended to publish proposed regulations by the end of the year and that Treasury welcomed the Government's participation in the rule-making process. Under the Federal Administrative Procedure Act, the Treasury must also consider the comments of any interested party after the proposed rules are published and before the rules become final, the release said.
Accompanying him to these meetings were Delegate Donna Christensen, Republican National Committeeman Holland Redfield, Senate President David Jones and Turnbull's assistant Nathan Simmonds. Also present were Turnbull's Washington counsel and representatives from PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Wednesday's meetings followed an all-day series of strategy meetings Tuesday which also included Sen. Shawn- Michael Malone and former U.S. Attorney David Nissman, the release said.
