Oct. 28, 2004 – Crucian Gold, located at 59 King's Wharf in Christiansted, has been producing quality jewelry for over 30 years.
Founder Brian Bishop says he has brought his experience as sailor to bear on his jewelry designs, some of which are based on sailors' knots. He taught himself the trade and is proud of the distinctive style he brings to his products. Much of the design, shop management, and craftwork now falls upon his two sons – Ben and Nathan.
Both were born and raised on St. Croix, as their father was, and have been around their father's jewelry business all of their lives.
Nathan recalled in a recent interview living in the back of his father's shop and starting working with jewelry around the age of 8 or 9.
The shop offers product specialties which include their unique Crucian bracelet, their trademark turks head knot rings and sugarmill pendants. The Bishops also sell many other styles of bracelets, rings, pendants and earrings. The family designs and manufactures everything in the shop. The workshop is behind the retail shop.
According to the Crucian Gold Web site, "Brian creates the finest hand-crafted bracelets, rings, pendants and earrings in his trademark style with the finest 14- or 18-karat gold to produce wearable works of art that will enthrall and inspire."
Its two-strand "Matthew Walkers" knot distinguishes the Bishops' Crucian bracelet. It is a button-like knot that is the bracelet's latch. This latch is what makes it different from the many other bracelets sold on St. Croix. The slogan, often heard on the radio waves, is "If it does not have the knot, it is not the Crucian bracelet."
This design, which is Crucian Gold's best-selling design, is available in different sizes and band widths. It is unisex and can be made to fit anyone including infants.
Bishop pioneered the Turks head ring, woven with one long strand of metal, in 1973. It is the Bishops' trademark item and also serves as their logo.
