Oct. 8, 2004 The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announced today Princess (Condo Row) beach waters have tested safe as of yesterday, according to press materials from the department. Earlier this week the water at Princess beach was found to have unsafe levels of bacteria for swimming.
Last weekend the Department of Public Works reported that during work on the wastewater main going through LBJ Housing Community, it would be necessary to pump sewage out to Long Reef. That action impacted water quality at Princess beach. The project was completed Wednesday, according to Department of Public Works Commissioner Wayne D. Callwood.
"The Department of Public Works, Cruzan Divers und General Engineering Corporation worked a minor miracle. They worked around the clock to minimize the negative impact of pumping over Long Reef and overcame several unforeseen obstacles, such as lines clogged with dirt and sand. The department worked in coordination with the contractors, met all of the stipulations imposed by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources and were able to replace 100 feet more than we originally anticipated and still stayed within the time frame stipulated for the completion of the project," Callwood said in a release.
