Man Held in Killing of Girlfriend, Baby Son, Brother

May 15, 2004 – A man, a woman and a 6-week-old boy were killed Saturday on St. Croix in what sources said was a domestic violence act related to a custody dispute involving the child.
The shooting deaths occurred at a Barren Spot residence. The alleged assailant — the woman's boyfriend and the baby's father — was in police custody, Sgt. Thomas Hannah, Police Department spokesman, said about an hour and a half later. Hannah later on Saturday identified the suspect as Jose Carrillo III.
Sources said that in the circumstances leading up to the shootings Carrillo and his girlfriend, Natasha Cummings, had been fighting and his brother, Wayne Walcott, intervened.
A 4-year-old boy, also the son of Cummings and Carrillo, also was in the house at the time of the shootings but was reportedly uninjured.
Hannah described the case as "a tragedy" and "a complex and difficult situation" and said an investigation is under way.
The sources described Carrillo as a firefighter and part-time employee at Kmart who also cut hair on the side. Police as of 4 p.m. Saturday had not released the identities of the woman or the baby, pending notification of next of kin.
A fellow firefighter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Carrillo is in his mid-30s and has been with the V.I .Fire Service for at least 10 years, most recently assigned to the Grove Place fire station. The couple had been together more than two years, he said.
The fellow firefighter described Carrillo as "a quiet fellow" who never showed anger except when talking about the back pay owed the firefighters by the government.
