May 8, 2004 Work began last week to make Frederiksted, in the words of Gov. Charles W. Turnbull, "a world recognized visitor destination."
The Public Finance Authority in 2002 began talking with members of the Frederiksted community about how to revitalize their town. On Thursday Frederiksted Revitalization Project began its first phase of construction.
According to a government release, the improvements to the waterfront being completed include construction at the Vincent Mason Pool Resort, the Verne E. Richards Veterans Park, Strand Street, the Eliza McBean Clock Tower and the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility.
PFA Executive Director Kenneth Mapp estimated the cost of phase I at $10.5 million.
The work is being completed by Coastal Systems Development Inc. and will include the demolition of the existing restrooms, construction of new restroom facilities and other amenities at the pool resort. Additionally, the Veterans Park will undergo major renovation. Construction on Strand Street will be managed to minimize the impact on traffic flow and on local businesses, the release stated.
The project goal is a new image for the Frederiksted waterfront, an image focusing on public spaces and the potential for unique experiences that will attract worldwide visitors, cruise ships, boaters and new residents.
Remarking on the commencement of this long-awaited project, Gov. Charles W. Turnbull commented, "As I promised the businessmen and women and the people of St. Croix, I would do all within my power to develop this island into a world recognized visitor destination promoting our rich culture, vibrant history and unique architecture."
