April 11, 2004 — While many Crucians were camping at the beach on Saturday morning, 16 cyclists were in the east end of St. Croix racing against the clock in the second race of the Spicy Grill Time Trial Series.
The time trial race is known as the "race of truth" because an individual must ride alone without the help of teammates and rely on his/her own speed and experience. Each cyclist leaves the starting line in one-minute intervals in the ranking position of ability and speed, with the fastest cyclist given the honor of last starting position. Top V.I. female cyclist Sue Brown proved to be the fastest in the 26-mile race with a time of 1:18:52.
The Elite cyclists rode two laps while the cyclists in the Expert and Sport categories rode one. Billy Lucas, of Bacchus Restaurant, took first place in the 13-mile loop with a time of 40:37.
Saturday's race was the second event in the Spicy Grill Time Trial Series. The final race in the series, a 10-mile point-to-point race, is scheduled for May 16.
