UVI Scholarship Application Deadline is April 2
UVI scholarships applications for the 2004-05 school year are now available for high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Applications can be obtained at the financial aid offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Applications and the required letter of recommendation are to be returned to the UVI-financial aid office no later than the scholarship deadline which is 4 p.m. Friday, April 2. UVI Humanities Festival Continues through April 3
UVI is celebrating literature, music, oral traditions and all of the disciplines that encompass the humanities at the Humanities Festival 2004 through April3. Events focus on the theme "Word Power Sound: Caribbean Cultural Connections." The festival — with most events taking place on UVI's St. Croix campus — features presentations by renowned Caribbean writers, musicians and filmmakers, and a popular comedian and social commentator.
UVI to Offer English Proficiency Exam April 15; Signup Deadline is April 2
UVI will offer the English Proficiency Examination (EPE) — a graduation requirement — on both campuses at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 15. The registration deadline is April 2. To register on St. Thomas visit the admissions office on the second floor of the Classroom Administration Building. For more information on St. Thomas call 693-1152. To register on St. Croix, visit the academic services office located in Evans Center Room 811. For more information on St. Croix call 692-4103. Walk-ins are not accepted. On St. Thomas the test will be administered in room 222 of the Sports and Fitness Center. On St. Croix the test will be administered in Evans Center rooms 302 and 305.
St. Thomas Campus Career Exploration Day; Health Fair Set April 2
UVI's 25th annual St. Thomas campus Career Exploration Day is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 2, in the Sports and Fitness center. UVI students, faculty and staff are invited to participate. The goal is to motivate students to actively plan for their professional futures. Included will be a panel discussion from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring UVI alumni and others from the education, banking and finance, law, and hotel/tourism industries. A presentation on the job market in the Virgin Islands will be made by V.I. Labor Commissioner Cecil Benjamin. Part two of the day will focus on careers available in the community service sector. Concurrently, a health fair will be operated from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. offering blood-pressure, blood sugar, blood cholesterol screening, HIV testing and visual acuity screening. UVI Day Set at Sunny Isle Mall Planned April 3
UVI will conduct a "UVI Day" at the Sunny Isle Mall on St. Croix on Saturday, April 3. UVI Day is designed to showcase program offerings at the University, highlight special initiatives, alert students and their parents as well as potential graduate students and adult learners about UVI application procedures and deadlines and expose the public to members of staff and faculty.
St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Chapter Slates Walk-A-Thon on April 3
The UVI Alumni Affairs Office has announced the St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Chapter will conduct a walk-a-thon at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, April 3, from Wendy's restaurant at Mandela Circle to Brewer's Bay on the St. Thomas campus. For more information, contact the alumni affairs office at 693-1047. Participants fee is $15 – entitles walker to UVI Alumni t-shirt, water bottle on route, light breakfast at Brewer's Beach. Sign-up is 5:30 a.m. and walk follows immediately. Funds raised will go toward scholarships offered by the chapter.
Golden Key Honor Society Sets Induction Ceremony April 4
UVI's St. Thomas campus chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society will conduct its annual induction ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, in the east mezzanine of the Sports and Fitness Center. Seventeen students will be inducted. This year's honorary inductees will be Rosalia Rohan, Dr. Malik Sekou, Jacqueline Sprauve and Erva Denham. The public is invited to attend the ceremony. UVI's St. Thomas campus chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society marks its 10th induction this year. To join Golden Key students must be juniors or seniors and have a grade point average of 3.3 or higher.
Foreign Language Honor Society Schedules Induction Ceremony April 4
UVI's St. Thomas campus Mu Pi Chapter of the Alpha Mu Gamma National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society will conduct its 7th induction ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at the West Mezzanine of the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. Twelve students will be inducted into the society which recognizes students with high achievements in foreign languages. The event is open to the public.
St. Thomas, St. Croix Intramural Champs to Clash Sunday, April 4
Winners of intramural basketball programs on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses will clash in a UVI Championship game at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 4, in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. St. Thomas champs Dun Ball Up will host the St. Croix champs which will be determined on Friday night in a 7 p.m. game at the campus ball court. The public is invited to all intramural games. UVI Seminar on April 4 to Highlight Recent Changes in the CPA Exam
A seminar designed to highlight changes in the recently updated CPA exam will be offered by the UVI Business Division at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus. Roy D. Jackson, CPA, will be the featured speaker. The seminar is open to current UVI students as well as the general public. The seminar is free. HIV Testing, Information Offered on St. Croix Campus
UVI's Health Services Department on the St. Croix campus and V.I. Care, an HIV testing company, will offer free HIV testing, free information and free condoms to members of the UVI Community between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday, April 5, at the Great House. Free Tax Filing Help to be Offered on St. Thomas Campus
Free tax filing assistance will be provided at UVI's St. Thomas campus from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11, in the Classroom Administration Building Computer Lab, Room 103. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Project, sponsored by the St. Thomas campus Business Division, aims to help community members prepare income tax returns. The tax filing assistance will be provided by UVI business students and professors using Turbo Tax, an on-line tax filing system. For more information call Professor Sharon Simmons at 693-1314.
First UVI Carnival Troupe Meeting Set for April 6
The first meeting of the UVI Carnival troupe will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Costume
s will be on display. Students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends and supporters are encouraged to join. The cost of joining the troupe is $100 for students and $150 for all others. This covers the cost of the costume, a T-shirt and food and drinks along the parade route. Troupe practice will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Dining Pavilion every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday until the adults' parade. UVI's theme for the 2004 St. Thomas Carnival Adults' Parade entry is "Knowledge, Culture and More for Carnival 2004." UVI Summer Science Enrichment Academies Seeking Interested Students
Positions for more than 100 Virgin Islands students in Grades 7 through 12 are available in the 2004 Summer Science Enrichment Academies program to be hosted by UVI. Applications are now available for the Academies. The application deadline for all academy sessions is April 23. St. Croix Highlights Counseling and Placement Month Activities
April is National Counseling Awareness Month and UVI's counseling and placement office on the St. Croix Campus is celebrating by hosting a series of special programs designed specifically for the university's faculty, staff and students.
Among the programs and activities planned are seminars on students with disabilities, a Career Exploration Week, the annual Career Fair with more than 35 employers expected to attend, Student Employee Appreciation Day, a workshop on resume writing and a panel discussion on professionalism in the workplace.

Seminar on Grant Writing Basics Set by SBDC on St. Thomas on April 8
A seminar on grant writing basics will be offered by UVI's Small Business Development Center from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 8, on St. Thomas. Titled "Grant Writing Basics: Funding Sources Identification and Proposal Development," the seminar will be presented by Diana Demers, director of the UVI office of sponsored programs. Pre-registration is required. Admission to the seminar is $20. A $5 discount is offered to individuals who pre-register by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6.The seminar is free for UVI faculty, staff and students, but they must pre-register. UVI Little Theatre Offers Spring Production April 16-19
The UVI Little Theatre Production for the spring semester will be "The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail." Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, this historical yet believably current play is about the night Thoreau was thrown in jail in 1846 for non-payments of taxes. The play will feature members of the community as well as UVI students. Show dates are April 16, 17, 18 and 19. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students.
