March 20, 2004 – E. James Belle, a music education major at the University of the Virgin Islands, will present his senior recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, at the Nisky Moravian Church on St. Thomas.
Belle is a saxophone-concentration student and will play three types of saxophones at the recital.
Belle's performance will include musical pieces from the Romantic Era and from Baroque composers. He will perform "Concerto in G Minor," by George F. Handel; "Minute Waltz," by Frederick Chopin; and "Air on a G String," by Johann Sebastian Bach. "Allegro Molto Quasi Presto," by Ludwig van Beethoven, will be performed with members of UVI's Saxophone Quartet.
Introduced to the saxophone in the third grade, Belle has been playing it ever since. During his musical career thus far, he has been a member of jazz and concert bands in elementary, junior high and high schools. At UVI he is a member of the Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. As a member of the various bands, Belle has traveled to and played in several states and Caribbean islands. A highlight of his musical career was playing at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton as a member of the Charlotte Amalie High School Band.
Belle is the saxophonist for The Starlites, a popular local band. Along with playing the saxophone, he also plays the drums and the six-bass steel pan.
All senior music education students at UVI are required to perform senior recitals, at least 50 minutes long, in partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of Arts degree.
