March 10, 2004 – Water and Power Authority line crews continued replacing damaged insulators on St. Croix's northwest side on Wednesday and were scheduled to change out those still in need of replacement on Thursday, WAPA announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Electric service to part of the area served by Feeder 10 was shut off at 9 a.m. Wednesday "to allow line crews to expedite the replacement and repair of damaged poles and insulators between the Naval Tracking Station and Ham's Bluff," a WAPA release stated.
The problems stem from damage to equipment as a result of the heavy buildup of salt spray from high tides and high winds along the coastlines last week, officials have said. "Such heavy salt residue on the insulators causes them to overheat, split and short out," the release stated.
Officials said the public may see arcing or flashing on poles throughout the island because of the salt buildup, and that anyone doing so should stay away from such poles and immediately report the situation to WAPA by calling 773-2250. Crews "are responding as quickly as possible to those areas to correct the problems," the release said.
According to Glenn Rothgeb, WAPA assistant executive director, more than 130 insulators were in need of replacement. Changing out poles and insulators is expected to "bring service back to normal," the release said.
