UVI to Observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 19
The university will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
University Community Invited to Spring Convocation
On Jan. 20 at 11:40 a.m., the Spring 2004 University Convocation will take a look at the year ahead for UVI. This event is for the university community. Locations are: via teleconference from Evans Center 401, Evans Center 718 and Evans Center 302A on the St. Croix campus and Business Education 110, Teacher Education 101 and Teacher Education 213 on the St. Thomas campus.
Reichhold Center Season Tickets Now on Sale
Reichhold Center for the Arts 25th Anniversary season tickets are on sale.
The season opens Feb. 28 with a show by legendary soul/R&B artist Jeffrey Osborne. For ticket information call the Reichhold Center Box office at 693-1559.

Intramural Men's and Women's Basketball Offered on St. Thomas Campus
The university is offering an organized basketball program in both men's and women's divisions on the St. Thomas Campus. This program emphasizes fun and team sportsmanship and is provided at no cost to students. For more information and to sign up, contact Prof. Erik Heikkila at the Sports and Fitness Center Room 227, or call 693-1213. A meeting for team captains is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23.
Non-Teaching Staff Council Seeks Input on Draft By-laws
The UVI Non-Teaching Staff Council met Tuesday, Jan. 13, to review organizational work done committees and to take steps toward finalizing the council's by-laws.
An early goal is to achieve legislative approval for staff and alumni representation on the UVI Board of Trustees. The Staff Council is also working toward the creation of a needs-assessment procedure. This would allow the council to assess issues and address policies that need to be initiated, revised or updated. Participants decided to seek additional staff input into the council's draft by-laws before putting them to a vote.
A copy of the draft by-laws is now available on the UVI web site. Links can be found in the "Latest Links" menu and in the "UVI Announcements" section on the UVI home page, or at the direct link. Staff members with suggestions are asked to forward them to Verna Rivers by e-mail, or drop them in suggestion boxes available on both campuses.
The deadline for suggestions is Jan. 31. The council will formally adopt the by-laws at its next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 10. For more information call 693-1111.

Marissa Garvey is New Student Employment Coordinator
The UVI counseling and placement office advises the university community that Marissa Garvey, formerly of the Freshman Center on the St. Thomas campus, is the new student employment coordinator, effective Jan. 12. Jan. 23 Deadline for STARfest 10 Applications
Friday, Jan. 23, is the deadline for applications for participants intending to participate in the annual talent exhibition, STARfest 10, which is set for May 8 and 9 at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Application forms are available at Parrot Fish, Krystal Gifts Galore, the UVI Bookstore and at all Modern Music Stores. For more information call 693-1550.
"Me & Mrs. Jones" St. Croix Screenings Set Jan. 31, Feb. 1
The UVI Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a screening of the acclaimed film "Me & Mrs. Jones" on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 on St. Croix. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Croix Educational Complex.
Seeking Volunteer Cooks for Afternoon on the Green 2004
Volunteer cooks are needed for UVI's Afternoon on the Green, set for March
14. Afternoon on the Green is UVI's annual food, family and fun "friendraiser." It features food based on recipes from around the world. Samples of the dishes prepared by volunteers will be sold at the event. Volunteer are also needed to serve at the event. For details, call UVI's institutional advancement office at 693-1040. Proceeds from Afternoon on the Green are used to help fund programs and services for UVI students and faculty.
UVI-CELL Offers Variety of Courses
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center (CELL) offers a variety of courses designed to providing the tools needed for success to individuals pursuing new careers, working to advance in their current professions or to those who simply want to explore a hobby or leisure-time activities. Basic Web Design
A course in Basic Web Design will be offered from Jan. 20 through Feb. 12 on St. Thomas. Learn what it takes to create an effective, professional and attention-getting Web site. This hands-on course will provide you with valuable tips on how a Web site is planned, structured and actually designed from the ground up. Classes will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Teacher Education Room 216. Fee: $425.
Money Management: Building Bridges to Financial Wealth
A course in Money Management will be offered from Jan. 21 through Feb. 25 on St. Thomas. Enhance your money management skills and improve your financial health with this course designed to help put you on the road to financial wealth. Instructors will be Michael J. Kelleher and Christopher E. Margolin of UBS Financial Services, Inc. Classes will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Teacher Education Room 216. Fee: $99.
Appraisers and Brokers Prep Course Rescheduled
The preparation course for the Real Estate Appraisers and Brokers Exam has been rescheduled to Feb. 21 on St. Croix. The course is designed to provide appraisers and brokers with in-depth information for the exam. The course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, in room C-100 (across from the Greathouse) on UVI's St. Croix campus. The fee for the course is $100. The Real Estate Appraisers and Brokers prep course is part of CELL's Real Estate Salesperson course series scheduled on St. Croix during January and February.
40th Annual Caribbean Food Crops Society Meeting Set on St. John
The 40th Annual Meeting of the Caribbean Food Crops Society (CFCS) will be held from July 19 to 23 at the Westin Resort on St. John. Kwame Garcia, director of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, is the society's president for 2003-2004. The society is
an organization of some 250 academic and research leaders in agriculture in the Caribbean.
The group has issued a call for papers for the session. The deadline for submission of paper abstracts is Feb. 27. The theme for the meeting is "Strengthening Partnerships for Sustaining Caribbean Agriculture." More information is available at the – CFCS Web site, or link from UVI's home page.
