ELDERLY MAN SHOT AND KILLED IN HIS HOME

May 8, 2003 – A 94-year-old man was gunned down in his living room Wednesday night as he watched television with his wife in their Sugar Estate home. Police have not identified the man pending notification of family members.
The homicide, the 10th this year for St. Thomas, occurred when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire on the couple's Sugar Estate trailer home. Shot in the torso, the elderly man died almost instantly, according to police sources. His wife was only a few feet away and narrowly missed being hit by the gunfire.
Police officials do not think the victim was the gunman's target. They believe the shooter had the wrong house or was firing at someone else and missed, according to police sources.
Police surrounded the area after the shooting, looking for evidence, suspects and witnesses.
A light-skinned male, wearing a light colored shirt, was seen fleeing the area after the shooting, sources said.
No other information about the vehicle or its occupants was available.
Police ask anyone with information on this or any crime to call the Major Crime Unit at 774-2196, the Crime Line at 777-8711 or the Investigations Bureau at 774-4050.
