May 7, 2003 Police Sgt. Elvin R. Fahie Sr. will replace Theodore Carty as the St. Thomas/Water Island deputy police chief.
Fahie has held a variety of positions with the department since 1979 when he joined Public Safety as an auxiliary police officer.
He served as supervisor of both the Richard N. Callwood Command and the Mariel C. Newton Command. He was also assigned to the Zone B Special Operations Bureau, the School Security Bureau and the Traffic Bureau.
A release issued to the Source Wednesday afternoon said Fahie is currently assigned to the Internal Affairs Bureau.
Police Commissioner Elton Lewis said Fahie possesses "strong qualities of leadership" and he is confident Fahie will lead the Police Department to "greater heights," according to the release.
It is the first change in the department's top brass since Lewis took over as commissioner, though some other changes have been made.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah replaced Sgt. Annette Raimer as public information officer. Capt. Melbourne Adams and Lt. Melvin Venzen were tapped to serve as liaisons for homeland security, and Lt. Herminio Velazquez took over as St. Croix deputy chief after his predecessor, Angel Santos, retired.
No reason was given for replacing Carty, and the release did not say when Fahie would take over.
