May 4, 2003 — William "Billy" Bohlke of St. Croix and Ruth Ann David of St. Thomas, both familiar names at the top of local races, topped the field of 107 runners in the 21st annual Carnival Mile Saturday morning.
Bohlke, a recent graduate and 1500-meter runner at Louisiana State University, participated for the first time in the race, and easily outdistanced fellow Cruzan Greg Johnson with a time of 4:43. Johnson, a long-time competitor, won the Master's Division with his time of 5:19. Third place went to 17-year-old Luis Guillen in a time of 5:46, and last year's winner Maurice Kurg was a close 4th in 5:47.
David, a four-time winner of the race, won in a time of 5:35 — just two seconds off the course record she posted last year. Charley Charles of Charlotte Amalie High School was second in 5:57, followed by two more teens: Aniecia Williams and former winner Tyfia Lee in 6:07 and 6:46 respectively.
The field included runners from 4 to 70-plus years old. Under the race sponsorship of Seaborne Airlines, proceeds go to benefit the St. Thomas-St. John Chapter of the American Red Cross.
AGE GROUP WINNERS
In the boys 12 and under age category Makenzie Shaw, Akim Frett and Adam Fuller were the top three in 6:39, 6:45 and 6:50. Girls 12 and under winners were sisters Tynequa and Tykela Lee in 6:59 and 6: 59, and Shantel Williams was third in 7:11.
13-19: Madison Van Heurck and Calvin Philip were runners-up to Guillen in 5:59 and 6:05 respectively.
20-29: Brad Kappel and Lucien Wallace were the male winners in 5:49 and 5:55, and Michelle Zielenski and Pamela LaPlace won for the women in 7:29 and 19:51.
30-39: The men's division was won by Greg Bettis in 5:59. Tim Miller and Roy Rogers were runners up in 6:01 and 6:35. The women's division was won by Tammie Waters in 6:52 with Simone Francis second in 6:57.1 and Camille McKayle third in 6:57.3.
40-49: Maurice Kurg's 5:47 won the division, with Dale Joseph and Peter Alter following in 5:49 and 6:02. The women's winner was Tanya Ward-Benjamin in 8:43, followed by Carol Lenahan and Karen Rice in 8:49 and 9:02.
50 and over: Men's winners were Johnson followed by Teddy Seymour in 6:14 and Frank Jackson in 6:15. Women's winners were Thyra Hammond in 9:16 with Joy Boyd and Toya Andrew both finishing in 15:27.
Super-Senior awards were given to Vince Fuller and Benita Martin.
