MAY 6 IS 'BRING YOUR MOM TO WORK DAY'

May 1, 2003 – The Virgin Islands is officially taking part in national "Bring Your Mom to Work Day" on Tuesday by way of a proclamation from the governor.
The observance was established by the national not-for-profit Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, founded in 1994 to promote public awareness of and raise funds for ovarian cancer research. According to fund information, more than 25,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year and about 14,500 die as a result. One in 55 women is at risk for developing this form of cancer, for which there is no early detection test.
The purpose of "Bring Your Mom to Work Day" is for employers and employees to show appreciation to "the special women in our lives — moms or mother figures including grandmothers, aunts, wives — and say 'I couldn't have done it without you,'" a Government House release issued on Thursday states.
The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Web site suggests other ways in which employers also can honor mothers and mother figures and asks participating companies and/or individuals to donate $5 per employee to the fund.
