NURSING STUDENT EDWIN GETS SERVICE AWARD

April 21, 2003 – Jarsley Edwin of Kings Hill, St. Croix, a senior majoring in nursing in the College of Human Services and Health Professions at Syracuse University, is a member of the African, Latino, Hispanic, Asian, Native American Student Nurses Association (ALHANA), an organization that was honored at the 11th annual Chancellor's Award for Public Service (CAPS) ceremony held recently on the university campus.
CAPS awards are given to acknowledge students who contribute to the improvement of the quality of life within the university and greater Syracuse communities, said a release. The purpose of the award is to encourage students to become active community participants and leaders by serving the needs of others, and to recognize the students for such efforts. Nominations for awards, which encompass individual students, groups of students, residence halls, residence floors, student organizations and academic projects or classes, are made by SU students, faculty and staff members. The winners are chosen by a selection committee that is comprised of students, faculty, staff and community members.
"CAPS winners and all student volunteers show us what can be done when there is a commitment to service," said Syracuse University Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw. "I am very proud of all the winners who have given so willingly of their time and talents."
Officially chartered in 1870 as a private, coeducational institution of higher education, Syracuse University is a leading student-centered research university. Syracuse's 11 schools and colleges share a common mission: to promote learning through teaching, research, scholarship, creative accomplishment and service while embracing the core values of quality, caring, diversity, innovation and service. The 680-acre campus is home to more than 18,000 full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students from all 50 states and 90 countries.
