April 19, 2003 – A soggy Easter holiday weekend lies ahead for all of the Virgin Islands and much of the Northeast Caribbean region. And while the upper-level trough that has pulled so much moisture up over the area is still in place, the rainfall Saturday will not be as widespread as it has been the last several days, according to meteorologist Alan Archer.
Despite the reprieve from scattered shower activity, Archer said, the stream of moisture from the south will continue and the showers that form during the daytime hours will be intense and could still generate some local flooding, the result of already saturated grounds.
Conditions call for a gradual improvement in the weather next week. Winds will become more northerly by Tuesday and the trough will move eastward, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service in San Juan. "As a result we will return to a relatively dry spell," Archer said.
The Saturday forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of showers through the day with mostly cloudy skies forecast for the nighttime hours with the same probability of rain. On Easter Sunday, partly cloudy skies will dominate with scattered and isolated showers through the day. The chance of rain is slightly reduced to 40 percent. Both days the winds remain southerly at 10-15 miles per hour.
