RETALIATION SEEN AS MOTIVE FOR LATEST KILLING

June 20, 2002 – A man police said was a prime suspect in the shooting death of 30-year-old George Anduze last Friday night in Christiansted's Times Square was himself shot and killed Wednesday night near Building 29 of the De Chabert Housing Community.
Kurt "Cutty" Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Police Chief Novelle Francis, who said Lawrence was "about 19 or 20 years old."
Francis said he believes the killing was in retaliation for the Anduze shooting. Francis said police had picked up Lawrence for questioning about the brazen 10 p.m. attack on Anduze in the crowded Times Square.
Lawrence died of a single bullet wound to the forehead, Francis said.
The Police Department Major Crime Unit is continuing to investigate both killings. Anyone with information about either shooting is asked to call the criminal investigation line at 778-4950 or 911.
Lawrence is the territory's 21st homicide for the year, the eighth on St. Croix.
At this time last year, there had been 12 killings in the territory, five of them on St. Croix.
