CONSERVATION, PRESERVATION NOMINEES TOTAL 13

Feb. 4, 2002 – The governor has nominated 11 people to serve on the Soil Conservation District Board of Supervisors and two to sit on the Historic Preservation Commission, according to a Government House release. All will require legislative approval.
Among other things, the Soil Conservation District Board is responsible for encouraging programs that prevent soil erosion and that seek to conserve water on publicly owned lands.
Each nomination is for a specific category of seat on the board:
For St. Croix land-occupier positions, the nominees are Joseph Samuel, a retired U.S. Customs officer and farmer; Enrico Gaspari, manager at Castle Nugent Farms; and Percival Edwards, a school monitor and part-time farmer. Land occupiers are people who rent land from the local government.
For the St. John land-occupier seat, the nominee is resident Charles "Trinidad Charlie" Deyalsing, an entrepreneur and crop loss adjuster for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency.
For the St. Thomas land-occupier slots, the nominees are Sheila Schulterbrandt, an agriculture specialist and full-time farmer, and Mary L. Alexander, an administrative assistant for the University of the Virgin Islands Humanities Division.
St. Croix's non-agriculture nominee is Earl Haase, a Public Works Department project manager. And Carmen Gonzales, a former assistant therapist at Juan F. Luis Hospital, has been nominated to represent the Historic Preservation Commission on the Soil Conservation District board.
St. Thomas's non-agriculture nominee is Cedric Lewis, a former Public Works Department workers with experience in maintenance and construction. Chaneel Callwood-Daniels, an architect, is the nominee to represent the Historic Preservation Commission on the Soil Conservation District board.
The Historic Preservation Commission oversees activities in the territory's historic districts. Those nominated to represent St. Croix on his agency are Gerville Rene Larsen, an architect, and Ilma Jackson Christian, retired Elena Christian Junior High School assistant principal. The nominee for St. John is artist Karen Samuel.
