April 11, 2001 – A 77-year-old cruise ship visitor to St. Thomas was hospitalized after the kayak he was paddling in overturned in waters off Sapphire Beach Wednesday morning.
The man, identified by police as James South, nearly drowned, according to Deputy Police Chief Theodore Carty.
South was trying to paddle the kayak along the shoreline of the popular East End beach when it reportedly capsized. A passenger on the cruise ship Nordam, which was docked in Crown Bay, he was transported by ambulance to the Roy L. Schneider Hospital, where he was reported in critical condition.
